Dongdaemun is a tough market. Prepare yourself or you’ll get ripped off or eaten alive.
You shouldn’t appear like a first timer. Act like you know the market. Below are do’s and don’t’s to help you through the wholesale market.
No small purses.
You shouldn’t appear like you’re having a good time, shopping for yourself, friends or family. Look like you’re here to buy loads to resell. A big bag(not a handbag!), preferably a lightweight, shabby looking one will do. Fill it up a little with some of your own stuff to make it look like you’ve spent a fair amount of money.
Don’t act like someone who’s out and about strolling, out on a pleasure trip, a softie.
Look like you’re here for a serious cause.
No credit card.
Dongdaemun is basically all about cash. The moment you mention or take out your credit card, they will kick you out, or worse, treat you like you’re invisible.
Dongdaemun sellers don’t welcome groups that are often loud and overtly communicative. Act alone like you’re a lone wolf.
No highheels. No thick makeup. No fancy dresses.
Dongdaemun is no red carpet or party. It’s a vast size area of roughly 8 blocks of shopping complex. If you want to make the most of it, wear comfortable shoes and act like you’re a tough cookie.
