What to eat is always a big issue and a delight for most visitors, but as the saying goes when in rome, do as the romans do”, try some authentic Korean food when you’re in Korea. If it’s not your first time in Korea and you have already tried “Sam-gye-tang”(chicken soup with bowled rice), the dish we’ll be introducing you today might not come across as a big of an adventure but for the first timers, it’s going to be a fun adventure to seek out the location and of course, try its delicious taste. The restaurant is called “Geo-Sung Dak-han-ma-ri” meaning “Geo-Sung one whole chicken” in Korean and has been introduced many times on magazines. As the name goes, it’s a hot chicken soup with a whole of chicken meat in it. A lot of Japanese tourists are spotted at the restaurant and obviously, they love it. I’m getting hungry writing about this.
"See Mt. Geumgang after you've eaten."
There is a Korean saying “See Mt. Geumgang after you’ve eaten”. Mount Geumgang is known to be one of the most beautiful spots in Korea. The saying can be converted to“The belly has no eyes”, and that in any situation, eating comes first. So eat first!
It’s located near Jongro 5-ga where you can find so many authentic Korean restaurants. It has fed the hungry stomachs of Dongdaemun merchants for over a century. The exterior doesn’t look like it’s been developed much. “Geo-sung Dak-han-ma-ri” is located in the ‘muk-ja-gol-mok’ of Jongro 5-ga, a street right next to the fabrics market. Actually there are probably more than three restaurants that have “dak-han-ma-ri” on the sign but the one I’m recommending is the place to go.
This is what it looks like. The black letter on the sign says “Geo-sung.” This is the place.
When you enter and sit, ask for “dak-han-ma-ri.” One would be enough to fill three or four people. The soup looks like this when they first serve. You have to boil it. While it’s being boiled, there’s one more thing you must prepare.
These are the sides that come with the dish. These are ingredients to make the sauce. You can make your own using these ingredients: pepper paste, soy sauce, garlic, mustard and leek. But let me recommend you a recipe.
- Fill 2/3 of the sauce dish with leek.
- Add 1/3 spoon of garlic.
- Add 1 1/2 spoon of pepper paste.
- Add a bit of soysauce.
Now it’s ready. Dip the end of the chopstick and try it.
Salty?!!!!!
Yes, it’s salty but it’s meant to be salty. It’s a dipping sauce so you don’t have to worry. When you dip the chicken bit and vegetables, it’ll be perfect. So trust me.

This is the gimchi they serve at the restaurant. It may look spicy but it’s much less spicier than the regular kimchi.

The Highlight of the dish!
The noodles! This is the finale of the dish. When you’re finished with the chicken, you boil the noodles using the leftover soup.
